Description
This silver medal, cataloged as J-CM-8, is the circa 1807 Sansom version of the American Revolution medal. Joseph Sansom's design for the Revolution medal was one of the most important early American medallic productions, and this silver version dating to approximately 1807 represents a striking from the early period of the U.S. Mint's medallic production. The J-CM-8 catalog number is shared with later bronze versions (PCGS #898204), with the metallic composition and date distinguishing the variants. By 1807, the U.S. Mint had been operational for fifteen years and was producing medals alongside its regular coinage under the direction of Chief Engraver Robert Scot. The silver composition indicates a premium striking for collectors or presentation purposes. The Sansom Revolution medal in silver from this early period is particularly scarce, as production quantities for silver medals at the young Mint were very small, and many examples were handled without the careful preservation that modern collectors practice.
