The 2020 (S) Proof Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve - Silver Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 427,256 silver proof Tallgrass Prairie quarters dated 2020. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a Regal Fritillary butterfly against Big Bluestem and Indian grasses. Tallgrass Prairie protects a remnant of the ecosystem that once covered 170 million acres of North America, of which less than 4 percent survives today. National Park of American Samoa (AS), Weir Farm (CT), Salt River Bay (VI), Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller (VT), and Tallgrass Prairie (KS) were featured. The final full year of the program, with pandemic-related production adjustments. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Struck in 99.9% silver, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
