Description

Third spiked head cataloged for the 2020 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime, this variety records a die crack from a year marked by extraordinary circumstances — the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted Mint operations and temporarily reduced production staffing, leading to a nationwide coin circulation shortage that prompted the Federal Reserve to establish a U.S. Coin Task Force. Despite operational constraints, Philadelphia continued striking dimes, and obverse dies kept cracking in service. On this die a crack ran from the rim into Roosevelt's bust and, filled with metal during striking, manifested as a raised spike on Roosevelt's portrait. Three spiked heads from 2020-P represents a moderate count for a Roosevelt Dime date, where spiked head documentation is less intensive than on Lincoln Cents. The 2020-P dime was produced on copper-nickel clad planchets, the composition standard since 1965 when silver was removed from circulating dimes. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins and documented August 26, 2023, SKH-10c-2020P-03 reflects the ongoing expansion of Roosevelt Dime spiked head catalogs as researchers increasingly turn their attention to denominations beyond the cent. Each documented entry adds to the record of spiked head die cracks across different denominations and production years.
