The 2018 (S) Native American Dollar - Reverse Proof, 50th Anniversary Set is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Sacagawea & Native American Dollars 2000 to Date series. The U.S. Mint reports 199,116 struck. The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, on her back; the reverse changes every year to honor a Native American contribution. The 2018 Native American Dollar honors Jim Thorpe (Wa-Tho-Huk) of the Sac and Fox Nation, a legendary multi-sport athlete who won two Olympic gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Struck in manganese brass (77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel) bonded to a pure copper core, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #679902.
