The West Point Mint struck 5,699 uncirculated Mark Twain five-dollar gold coins dated 2016. The gold coin companion to the Mark Twain dollar, this $5 piece features a steamboat on the reverse — a nod to Twain's years as a Mississippi River steamboat pilot and his pen name, taken from the river term 'mark twain' meaning two fathoms deep. The obverse features a portrait of Mark Twain, while the reverse displays a steamboat with its paddlewheel visible, evoking Twain's time as a Mississippi River pilot. Designed by Benjamin Sowards/Ronald D. Sanders. Struck in 90% gold and 10% alloy, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #593897.
