Description
Part of the Jefferson Nickels Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series, the 2016 (D) Jefferson Nickel is a nickel from the Denver Mint. The Denver Mint struck 759,600,000 nickels dated 2016. The obverse shows Jamie Franki's forward-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson in a three-quarter view, introduced in 2006 as the first U.S. circulating coin portrait of a president facing forward, and the reverse shows Felix Schlag's Monticello, restored by John Mercanti. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.21 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #606621.
