Description
The Mamie Eisenhower bronze medal honors a First Lady who brought a sense of domestic warmth and middle-American normalcy to the White House during the prosperous 1950s. Mary Geneva "Mamie" Doud Eisenhower married the future general and president in 1916, and over the next three decades she moved twenty-seven times as a military wife, developing the organizational skills and social grace that would serve her well in the White House. The obverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, portrays a woman whose trademark bangs, pink wardrobe, and cheerful demeanor made her a fashion icon and symbol of postwar American optimism. The reverse, designed by Chris Costello and sculpted by Renata Gordon, references the Eisenhower family's domestic life and Mamie's role in managing the social calendar of the executive mansion. As First Lady from 1953 to 1961, Mamie Eisenhower ran the White House with the precision of a military operation, personally supervising every detail of state dinners and social events. She received an enormous volume of mail and replied to much of it personally. Mamie openly supported a number of charities, particularly those related to heart disease after her husband's 1955 heart attack. She lived quietly in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania after Dwight's death in 1969, passing away in 1979. Struck in bronze at 1-5/16 inches.
