Description
The 2014 Franklin D. Roosevelt medal was issued by the United States Mint as part of the presidential medal program. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the thirty-second President (1933-1945), is the only person to have been elected to four terms, serving from the depths of the Great Depression through the Allied victory in World War II. His presidency fundamentally transformed the relationship between the American government and its citizens through the New Deal, which established Social Security, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and dozens of other agencies and programs that remain central to American governance. Roosevelt's leadership during World War II was equally transformative. From the Lend-Lease program that sustained Britain before American entry into the war, through the mobilization of the "Arsenal of Democracy," to the planning of the D-Day invasion and the conferences at Casablanca, Tehran, and Yalta, FDR directed the most massive military effort in human history. He died on April 12, 1945, less than a month before Germany's surrender, at Warm Springs, Georgia. The obverse features Roosevelt's distinctive profile, including his trademark cigarette holder and confident upward tilt of the chin that became one of the most recognizable images in American political history. Roosevelt's ability to project optimism and strength despite his paralysis from polio made him an inspirational figure whose medal portrait captures that indomitable spirit.
