Description
This bronze medal is a modern restrike of the George Washington "Time Increases His Fame" design cataloged as Julian PR-27. Modern restrikes represent the Mint's later production of medals from either original dies or replacement copies, typically produced from the early twentieth century onward to satisfy ongoing collector demand for this popular Washington medal. The distinction between original strikings, mid-period restrikes, and modern restrikes is significant for collectors and is reflected in both pricing and certification labeling. NGC, for example, differentiates between original bronzed copper medals (labeled with the Julian number and "AE"), mid-period restrikes from the early 1900s (labeled "bronze" with "restrike"), and late restrikes from approximately the 1950s-1970s (labeled "modern restrike"). The obverse maintains Washington's classical bust portrait, and the reverse preserves the TIME INCREASES HIS FAME inscription that has made this design one of the most enduringly popular Washington medals. Modern restrikes in bronze lack the chemical bronzing treatment applied to the original copper strikings, resulting in a somewhat different surface appearance — typically a brighter, more reddish-brown color compared to the darker, more uniform surface of bronzed originals. Modern restrikes serve an important role in making historically significant medal designs accessible to collectors at price points well below those commanded by original strikings. They preserve the artistic merit and historical connection of the design while acknowledging through their composition and surface characteristics that they are products of a later striking period.
Rarity Notes
Common. Modern restrikes were produced in substantial quantities to meet collector demand. They are the most affordable way to acquire the Time Increases His Fame design. Earlier original strikings and mid-period restrikes command significant premiums.
