Description

The 2011 (W) Proof United States Army Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a proof five-dollar gold coin struck at the West Point Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Five Dollar Gold (1984-Date) series. The West Point Mint struck 17,148 proof U.S. Army five-dollar gold coins dated 2011. The obverse features five soldiers from different eras of the Army, and the reverse displays the Army emblem with THIS WE'LL DEFEND. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck at the West Point Mint, originally a bullion depository that became a full coin production facility, specializing in commemorative and bullion issues. Struck in 90% gold and 10% alloy, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #506172.
