2011 Nickel Pattern - J-2212, Waffle-Cancelled Trial
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A second waffle-cancelled nickel pattern from 2011, testing a different composition from J-2210 in the same alternative metals evaluation program. The sequential Judd numbers indicate that multiple alloys were tested for the nickel denomination, each receiving its own catalog entry based on distinct metallurgical characteristics. J-2212 was struck on a nickel-format planchet of experimental composition, evaluated for its properties, and then waffle-cancelled to prevent circulation. The Mint's 2012 report to Congress (Biennial Report to the Congress on the Current Status of Coin Production Costs and Analysis of Alternative Content) identified several promising compositions that could reduce production costs while maintaining the electromagnetic signature required for vending machine acceptance, but noted that any change would require congressional authorization and significant industry preparation time. The waffle cancellation on J-2212 is typically more aggressive than on coins cancelled for simple retirement, as the Mint took extra precautions with experimental compositions that had never been authorized for production to ensure no specimens could be mistaken for approved coinage.
Rarity Notes
R-8 (Extremely Rare). Like J-2210, waffle-cancelled nickel trials from 2011 are very scarce outside Mint holdings.
