2011 (D) Lincoln Shield Cent - SKH-1c-2011D-01 Spiked Head

Description

This variety is a spiked head from the 2011 Denver Mint Lincoln Shield Cent. The 2011-D Shield Cent was only the second year of the new reverse design at Denver, and die variety documentation for early Shield Cent D-mint dates remains relatively sparse. Like every spiked head, it is a crack in the obverse die that runs from the rim into Lincoln's bust. Metal fills the crack during striking, producing the raised spike on Lincoln's portrait that characterizes spiked head varieties. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins on January 2, 2019, this variety is from Denver's 2011 spiked head production. The D mintmark on the obverse provides unambiguous facility identification.
