The West Point Mint struck 49,306 proof one-ounce American Buffalo gold coins dated 2009. The obverse features James Earle Fraser's Native American portrait from the 1913 Buffalo nickel, which Fraser said combined the features of three chiefs, Iron Tail, Two Moons and Big Tree, and the reverse displays his American bison standing on a mound. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements.
