About This Coin
The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle is a United States Gold Double Eagle from the Ultra High Relief Twenty Dollar Gold 2009 series. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design — faithfully reproduced from the original ultra-high-relief 1907 design that was deemed too impractical for mass production, while the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it in ultra-high relief. Designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens. Struck in 99.99% gold, weighing 31.1 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin realized Augustus Saint-Gaudens' original 1907 vision in modern production technology. What was impossible in 1907 — striking the extreme relief in a single pass — became achievable with 21st-century die technology and hydraulic presses. One of the most celebrated modern Mint products. Each coin contains one ounce of .9999 fine gold struck in dramatic high relief with lettered edge.
