Description

The 2008 (S) Proof Alaska Silver State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.2 million examples, making this ranked 11th of 30 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii. Final year of the 50 State Quarters Program. The DC and Territories program followed in 2009. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $26 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #39193.
