RIDB-1c-2008-01 Retained Interior Die Break
Error
Description
Cataloged on the 2008-P Lincoln Memorial Cent, RIDB-1c-2008-01 is a retained interior die break from the final year of the Memorial reverse design. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial, introduced in 1959, was retired after the 2008 production run and replaced by the four-design Lincoln Bicentennial reverses in 2009. This terminal-year status gives 2008 Memorial cent varieties added historical interest as the last coins to carry a design that appeared on billions of pennies over five decades. Retained interior die breaks form when an area of the die face within the design field cracks and partially separates without detaching, producing a raised, slightly displaced region on struck coins. Unlike rim cuds, which connect to the coin's edge, interior die breaks can appear anywhere within the design, making their locations unpredictable and each cataloged example unique. The 2008-P cent represents the end of an era for a reverse design that had become one of the most familiar images in American pocket change.
