Description

The 2003 (P) Proof First Flight Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar is a proof cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Half Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 109,500 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 66% of production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $489 PR70 04-11-2011 David Lawrence RC. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #921001.
