Description

The 2002 (W) Salt Lake City Olympic Games Commemorative Five Dollar Gold was struck at the West Point Mint as a dollar in the Modern Commemorative Five Dollar Gold (1984-Date) series. With a mintage of 10,585, this is a scarce issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. West Point's facility evolved from a bullion storage depot into a key coin production center, now responsible for many commemorative and precious-metal issues. Auction record: $633 MS70 02-24-2008 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9799.
