Description

The 2001 (S) Proof North Carolina Silver State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 889,694 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 20 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse recreates the Wright Brothers' first powered flight at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903, with the inscription "First Flight." This 12-second, 120-foot journey launched the age of modern aviation. New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Kentucky. Proof and silver proof sets became major revenue sources for the Mint. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $30 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #913020.
