Description

The 2001 (P) Proof U.S. Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative Half Dollar is a proof cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Half Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 77,962 examples, making this the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $4,113 PR70 04-24-2013 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99790.
