Description
The 2001 (P) Capitol Visitor Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Philadelphia Mint struck 35,380 uncirculated United States Capitol Visitor Center dollars dated 2001. Part of a three-coin program to raise funds for the Capitol Visitor Center, which opened in 2008. The obverse features the original Capitol building in the foreground with the present Capitol in the background, showing the evolution of the building, while the reverse displays a contemporary interpretation of the U.S. bald eagle wrapped in a banner reading 'U.S. Capitol Visitor Center'. Designed by Marika Somogyi/John M. Mercanti. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9791.
