Description
The 1998 (S) SMS Kennedy Half Dollar is a special strike half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Clad and Silver Proof 1971 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 62,000 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $45 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a 150 reeds edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6775.
