Description

The 1998 (S) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Proof Close AM is a proof cent struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959-2008 series. On proofs the relationship is the other way round: proof production used the Wide AM reverse, so a proof carrying the Close AM is the variety. The 2.1 million mintage is for the date, not for the variety, which accounts for a small fraction of it. The obverse features Abraham Lincoln facing right and the reverse displays the Lincoln Memorial building in Washington, D.C.. Struck in copper-plated zinc, the composition cents have carried since 1982. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Struck in copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams, 19.05 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #93529.
