About This Coin
The 1997 American Eagle Ten Dollar Platinum is a United States platinum coin from the American Eagle Ten Dollar Platinum 1997 to Date series — the first year of the series. In 1997, coins were struck at the West Point and Philadelphia Mints with a combined mintage of 107,243. This represents the highest annual mintage in the entire series, above the series median of 33,456. The obverse features the Statue of Liberty facing forward and the reverse displays an eagle soaring over the sunrise. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. Struck in 99.95% platinum, weighing 3.11 grams, 16.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Across its variants, estimated values range from $2.3K to $2.7K depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $16K in MS69 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by John M. Mercanti (obverse) / Thomas D. Rogers Sr. (reverse).
