Description
The 1996 (P) Proof Smithsonian Institution 150th Anniversary Dollar is a proof dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Dollars (1982-Date) series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 129,152 proof Smithsonian Institution 150th Anniversary dollars dated 1996. The obverse shows the Smithsonian "Castle" and the reverse a figure of knowledge seated on a globe. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9743.
