Description

The 1995 (S) Proof Civil War Battlefield Commemorative Half Dollar is a proof half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Half Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 317,396 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 73% of production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Auction record: $610 PR70 02-09-2009 David Lawrence RC. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9699.
