Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as SKH-5C-1995P-09, this 1995 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel is a dual-error coin exhibiting both a spiked head and a bisecting rim-to-rim die crack, the latter separately listed as RRDC-5c-1995P-01. Spiked head errors on Jefferson Nickels occur when a die crack extends outward from Jefferson's portrait, creating a distinctive spike-like projection from the head. The concurrent presence of a full rim-to-rim die crack indicates severe structural degradation of the die, with fractures propagating both through the portrait area and across the entire die face. Finding two cataloged error types on the same coin from the same die reflects how die failures often compound: once initial cracks form, stress concentrates along the fracture lines and accelerates further breaking. The 1995 Philadelphia Mint produced large quantities of Jefferson Nickels, but dual-error specimens where both the spiked head and the bisecting crack are visible represent a subset that error collectors prize for their concentrated evidence of die deterioration.
