Description

Five documented rim cuds for the 1994 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter indicate that the die pairs used for this date experienced a notable rate of rim failure. A rim cud forms when a section of the die rim breaks away completely, and the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the coin's edge — obliterating whatever inscription, stars, or design detail occupied the affected area. The 1994-P quarter was struck during the pre-State Quarter era when the reverse still carried John Flanagan's heraldic eagle design, in continuous use since 1932. Philadelphia's substantial production volume consumed many die pairs, each carrying an inherent probability of rim failure as striking forces accumulated over tens of thousands of impressions. Five cuds from one date and mint is a moderate concentration, suggesting either thorough examination coverage for 1994-P or production conditions that promoted elevated die stress. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, CU-25c-1994P-05 is the fifth sequential entry documenting rim failures, with entries -06 and -07 following in the catalog.
