Description
Fifth spiked head cataloged for the 1994 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, this die crack variety documents yet another obverse die that cracked from the rim into Jefferson's bust, the filled crack creating a raised protrusion on Jefferson's portrait. The spiked head phenomenon on Jefferson Nickels predates the Shield Cent spiked heads by decades, though systematic documentation accelerated dramatically with the rise of online die variety databases in the 2000s. Five spiked heads from the 1994-P means at least five obverse dies cracked this way, consistent with Philadelphia's nickel production volumes of the mid-1990s. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with no known cross-references, SKH-5c-1994P-05 was documented on July 8, 2024, indicating continued active research into Jefferson Nickel spiked heads even decades after the coins were originally struck.
