Description
The 1992 (D) Columbus Commemorative Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Denver Mint. The Denver Mint struck 135,702 uncirculated Columbus half dollars dated 1992. Part of the 1992 three-coin program marking the quincentenary of Columbus's first voyage, this half dollar depicts the moment of landfall in the New World. The obverse features Christopher Columbus at landfall with arms outstretched, his crew and a small boat behind him, and a ship in the background, while the reverse displays Columbus's three ships — the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria — under sail. Designed by T. James Ferrell/Thomas D. Rogers. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9662.
