Description
This 1990 U.S. Coast Guard Bicentennial medal in yellow bronze at 76mm diameter commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Revenue Cutter Service, established by Alexander Hamilton in 1790, which evolved into the modern United States Coast Guard in 1915. The Coast Guard is unique among the five armed services as both a military branch and a law enforcement agency, responsible for maritime safety, search and rescue, environmental protection, and port security. The 76mm format is the standard large-size U.S. Mint medal, providing ample surface for detailed engraving depicting Coast Guard themes. Hamilton established the Revenue Cutter Service to enforce tariff laws and prevent smuggling, making it one of the oldest continuous seagoing services in the nation. The bicentennial medal honored two centuries of service that expanded from customs enforcement to encompass the full range of maritime responsibilities the Coast Guard performs today.
