Description
The 1989 (D) Congress Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint as a dollar in the Modern Commemorative Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 135,203 examples, making this the scarcer of two mint variants, with 15% of total production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue, authorized by Congress to honor significant American events, people, and institutions and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Auction record: $7,486 MS70 06-29-2014 Great Collections. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9634.
