Description

The 1986 (W) Proof Statue of Liberty Centennial Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a proof cent struck at the West Point Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Five Dollar Gold (1984-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 404,013 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 81% of production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors.
