Description
The 1986 (D) Statue of Liberty Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Denver Mint. The Denver Mint struck 928,008 uncirculated Statue of Liberty Centennial half dollars dated 1986. Part of a three-coin program celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty's dedication in 1886, this half dollar captures the immigrant experience that the Statue symbolizes. The obverse features the Statue of Liberty against the New York skyline with an immigrant ship arriving in the harbor and the sun rising in the east, while the reverse displays an immigrant family of four standing on an Ellis Island wharf overlooking New York City across New York Harbor, with the inscription 'A Nation of Immigrants'. Designed by Edgar Z. Steever/Sherl J. Winter. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9618.
