Description
This token from the 1984-99 period was included in United States Mint Uncirculated Sets as a Philadelphia Mint identifier. Paired with the Denver Mint token in each year's set, the Philadelphia token accompanied the coins struck at the nation's first mint facility, established in 1792. The Philadelphia Mint, designated by the "P" mintmark on most coins since 1980, is the oldest continuously operating mint in the United States and the primary production facility for circulating coinage. The Philadelphia identifier token mirrors the Denver token in size and general format, with design elements indicating the Philadelphia Mint's identity. Together, the paired tokens helped collectors organize the two halves of each year's Uncirculated Set correctly. The 1984-99 production period covers an era of significant change in American coinage, including the introduction of clad composition coins for commemorative programs, the expansion of the American Eagle bullion series, and the planning stages of the 50 State Quarters Program. These mint identifier tokens, while utilitarian in purpose, have become collected artifacts of the U.S. Mint's evolving approach to numismatic products and collector engagement.
Rarity Notes
Common, with production quantities matching annual Uncirculated Set runs. Collected primarily as components of complete sets rather than as individual tokens.
