Description

Reaching the fifties in the 1982 Philadelphia cud census, CU-1C-1982-53 on the Bronze Small Date subtype stands as evidence that the flow of new discoveries from this transitional year has not slowed even decades after the coins were struck. The economic circumstances of 1982 played an unexpected role in preserving error coins: when the Mint announced the composition change from 95% copper to zinc, thousands of people began hoarding copper cents for their metal content, inadvertently setting aside rolls and bags that would later yield cud specimens for eagle-eyed searchers. The Bronze Small Date, struck from the traditional alloy with its warm reddish tone, was among the coins swept into those early hoards. Each cud represents a working die that developed a terminal rim fracture — a segment of hardened steel that separated under the cumulative stress of millions of high-pressure strikes, leaving a void that filled with planchet metal on every subsequent impression.
