Description

As the census approaches forty entries for the 1982 Philadelphia cent, CU-1C-1982-37 on the Bronze Large Date subtype demonstrates that the well of undiscovered cuds from this transitional year has not yet been exhausted. New census entries can emerge from several sources: unsearched original bank-wrapped rolls from the 1980s, estate collections where coins were set aside decades ago, and even routine pocket change in regions where older cents still circulate. The longevity of the discovery pipeline is a testament to the astronomical production numbers at Philadelphia in 1982 — enough cents were struck to ensure that random die failures, even those affecting only the final few thousand coins before a die was retired, produced surviving populations large enough to be found by dedicated searchers. The Bronze Large Date cent, struck from 95% copper planchets at 3.1 grams, predates the zinc transition and uses the wider-spaced large date numerals.
