The "A" suffix indicates that this specimen was struck while the die rim break was at an initial stage of development — smaller in extent, with crisper fracture edges and less displacement of the surrounding die surface. Paired with CU-1C-1982-35B (the later die state), these two entries together document the progressive deterioration of a single working die as it continued to strike coins after the initial rim fracture formed. Split A/B entries are relatively uncommon in the Cuds on Coins census because they require that specimens from both the early and late stages of the same die's breakdown be discovered, identified, and submitted — a chain of events that depends on multiple coins from a narrow production window surviving and reaching the hands of knowledgeable searchers.
