Description

With CU-1C-1982-26, the Bronze Large Date continues to accumulate census entries at a pace that underscores its status as one of the more commonly encountered 1982 Philadelphia subtypes among cud varieties. This is expected — the Bronze Large Date configuration was the default production setup at the start of the year, meaning more dies were likely prepared and pressed into service for this subtype than for the Small Date or early zinc production runs. More dies in service translates directly into more opportunities for rim fractures, and the census reflects that probability. The cud itself — a raised mass of featureless metal where a segment of the die rim separated — is the hallmark of a terminal die failure. Once the rim fractures, the resulting void fills with planchet metal during each subsequent strike, and the cud grows in prominence as the break enlarges through continued use.
