Description

Appearing on the Bronze Large Date subtype, CU-1C-1982-16 documents a die rim failure on one of the pre-transition 1982 Philadelphia cent configurations — a coin struck from the traditional 95% copper, 5% zinc alloy weighing 3.1 grams. The bronze composition gives these cuds a visual character distinct from their zinc counterparts: the warm reddish-copper tone of a freshly struck bronze cent contrasts with the slightly grayer hue of copper-plated zinc, and experienced collectors can often distinguish the two compositions at a glance before confirming by weight. Bronze cuds from 1982 carry a particular numismatic resonance because they represent the final year of a copper cent tradition stretching back to 1962, when the alloy was standardized for the Lincoln Memorial reverse series. The Large Date punch style — with its broader, more generously spaced numerals — was the configuration Philadelphia used at the start of the year before the Small Date variant entered production.
