Description

Sixth in the 1982 Philadelphia cud census and assigned to the Zinc Large Date subtype, CU-1C-1982-06 continues the pattern of die rim failures documented on this particular combination of composition and date style. Six confirmed cuds within the early portion of the census suggests that Philadelphia's zinc Large Date die inventory experienced rim failures at a meaningful rate — consistent with the general observation that die rim edges are the most mechanically vulnerable area of any working die. The transition to zinc planchets mid-1982 may have introduced unfamiliar striking dynamics: the copper-plated zinc blanks, at 2.5 grams versus the previous 3.1-gram copper blanks, behaved differently under pressure, and dies calibrated for one composition may have experienced accelerated wear or unexpected stress patterns when striking the other. CU-1C-1982-06 was verified as a unique die through comparison against the five preceding entries, and no secondary cross-reference numbers have been assigned. The Zinc Large Date designation confirms post-transition production at the Philadelphia Mint. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
