Description

Advancing the Large Date tally to twenty-two, CU-1c-1982-22(LD) on the Zinc Large Date subtype at 2.5 grams adds another unique die fracture to the growing subtype-specific catalog. The organizational value of the subtype-specific numbering system becomes increasingly apparent at this census depth: while the sequential numbering (CU-1C-1982-01 through -85) assigns each die break a global position regardless of which subtype it appears on, the subtype-specific series allows researchers to isolate die failure rates within each of the four Philadelphia configurations — a granularity that enables statistical comparisons between subtypes and can reveal whether certain compositions or date punch styles experienced disproportionate die failure rates. At twenty-two Large Date entries and counting, the data is beginning to approach sample sizes where meaningful pattern analysis becomes possible, though the self-selected nature of the discovery process — not every cud is equally likely to be found and submitted — introduces sampling biases that must be acknowledged in any statistical interpretation. On this zinc planchet, the copper-plated surface gives way to the characteristic lighter weight that separates it from its bronze pair member. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
