Description
A rim cud at census position sixty, CU-1C-1982-60 on the Bronze Large Date subtype records a peripheral die fracture whose break geometry confines the raised metal to the coin's outermost edge. Rim cuds on the Bronze Large Date have appeared at regular intervals throughout the census — a distribution consistent with the statistical expectation that a certain proportion of die failures will localize at the collar junction regardless of census depth. The physical examination protocol for confirming a rim cud requires verifying that the raised strip meets several diagnostic criteria: it must show the flat, shelf-like profile characteristic of a die-origin rim interruption rather than the rounded or irregular contours of post-strike damage; it must be continuous along its arc rather than intermittent; and its position must map to a unique angular range not duplicated by any existing census entry.
