Description
Another rim-classified entry on the Bronze Large Date subtype, CU-1C-1982-49 brings the peripheral fracture count for this composition-date combination to multiple confirmed specimens. The recurrence of rim cuds alongside interior cuds within the same subtype provides a natural experiment in die failure analysis: if the same die steel, the same heat treatment, and the same press parameters produced both failure geometries, then the determining variable is likely the location of pre-existing metallurgical imperfections within each individual die blank. A microscopic inclusion or grain boundary weakness near the collar interface favors a rim fracture, while a similar defect further inboard favors an interior break. Collectors sometimes describe rim cuds as subtle finds because the narrow raised strip they produce can be mistaken for die deterioration or simple rim damage, requiring careful examination under magnification to confirm the characteristic flat-topped profile of displaced metal that distinguishes a genuine cud from post-strike damage. This 95% copper cent weighs 3.1 grams in the pre-transition bronze alloy. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
