Description
Classified as a rim cud, CU-1C-1982-44 records a fracture on the Bronze Large Date subtype where the die break remained confined to the coin's outermost peripheral band rather than extending inward to displace portrait or legend elements. The distinction between a rim cud and an interior cud is rooted in fracture mechanics: rim-confined breaks typically originate at the junction where the die face meets the collar channel, a zone of concentrated stress where the die's edge is geometrically thinnest and most vulnerable to fatigue cracking. The resulting feature on the struck coin reflects the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course — visually subtler than an interior cud, but no less significant as a record of die failure. Philadelphia's 1982 Bronze Large Date dies, working the heavier 3.1-gram copper planchets at production speeds measured in hundreds of strikes per minute, were subjected to compressive loads that inevitably produced both failure modes across the die inventory.
