Description

Forming the bronze half of CU-1c-1982-28(LD), this interior cud on the 95% copper alloy planchet at 3.1 grams with the wider large date numerals adds another entry to the longest-running subtype series in the 1982 Philadelphia cud catalog. The Bronze Large Date's dominance in the census reflects a straightforward production reality: more dies served this subtype than any other because it ran first, ran longest, and consumed the largest share of Philadelphia's 1982 die inventory before the mid-year transition introduced the zinc composition and the small date punch variation. Each bronze entry at this depth in the catalog represents a die whose fracture went undiscovered — or at least unreported — for years or decades before a dedicated searcher identified it, photographed it, and submitted it through the Cuds on Coins verification pipeline. The solid copper-zinc alloy composition of the bronze planchet produces a cud surface that is materially continuous with the surrounding design field: no plating boundary, no compositional layering, just uniform 95% copper alloy from the raised plateau's peak down through the coin's full thickness. This material uniformity distinguishes the bronze cud visually and metallurgically from its zinc twin's layered copper-over-zinc fill. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
