About This Coin

The 1982 Kennedy Half Dollar is a United States half dollar from the Kennedy Half Dollars Clad and Silver Proof 1971 to Date series. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts, while the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Designed by Gilroy Roberts/Frank Gasparro. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 11.3 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a 150 reeds edge. Produced at the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints. From 1971 onward, Kennedy Half Dollars were struck in copper-nickel clad composition. Although produced in large quantities, the denomination gradually disappeared from everyday commerce as the public continued to hoard the coins. Since 2002, half dollars have been produced only for collectors. Silver proof versions have been available since 1992. The 50th Anniversary (2014) saw special gold and silver editions. Satin finish versions were struck from 2005-2010.
