Description
A proof Washington quarter from 1981, struck at the San Francisco Mint with the "S" mintmark. Struck in standard copper-nickel clad composition, this coin was produced using specially prepared dies and polished planchets, resulting in mirror-like fields and frosted design elements characteristic of modern proof coinage. The obverse features John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington, and the reverse depicts a heraldic eagle. The 1981-S proof comes in two varieties: Type 1 features a flat S mintmark with a rounded appearance, while the rarer Type 2 has a sharper, more deeply cut S mintmark. The Type 2 variety is considerably scarcer.
