Description

The 1981 (S) Proof Susan B. Anthony Dollar - Type 1 is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Susan B. Anthony Dollars 1979-1999 series. San Francisco struck 4.1 million proof Susan B. Anthony dollars in 1981 in all; how they divide between the Type 1 and Type 2 mintmarks is not recorded. The obverse features Susan B. Anthony facing right, the first real woman, rather than an allegorical figure, on a circulating U.S. coin, and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon, adapted from the Apollo 11 mission patch. Struck only for inclusion in official Mint Sets and proof sets — no business strikes were released for circulation. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $163. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99594.
