Description
The 1981 (S) Proof Susan B. Anthony Dollar - Type 1 is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Susan B. Anthony Dollars 1979-1999 series. With a mintage of 4.1 million, this is a scarce issue — ranked 0th of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 42% of production. The obverse features Susan B. Anthony facing right, the first woman depicted on a U.S. circulating coin and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon, adapted from the Apollo 11 mission patch. Struck only for inclusion in official Mint Sets and proof sets — no business strikes were released for circulation, making 1981 issues the scarcest SBA dollars. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $163.
