Description
The 1978 (D) Jefferson Nickel represents a Denver Mint issue from the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The U.S. Mint produced 313.1 million examples, making this the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Both mints active with typical production levels. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $4 depending on grade and condition.
