The 1978 (D) Jefferson Nickel represents a Denver Mint issue from the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The Denver Mint struck 313,092,780 nickels dated 1978. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Both mints active with typical production levels. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906.
